In Level 1, I begin by teaching the basics of balance and control before progressing on up the scale of exercises. The curriculum that I use is from Dragoo Adventure Rider Training (D.A.R.T.) It’s a stair step approach as everything builds from one step to the other. You can’t miss a step, and the better you learn the early steps, the faster you’ll master the more difficult skills. Bike setup, body position, peg weight steering, counterweighting for tight turns, braking and swerving will be the focus. Exercises are cumulative and comprehensive. The class format is designed for students to get a lot of repetition and time to develop the skills. If you feel like this is too easy for you, we can move you over to the Level 2 class no problem. This is a very unique opportunity to be able to select one class and then decide that it’s not a good fit and be able to move over to the other class.

For the Level 2 training, we have a special guest instructor, Pat Jacques. Pat is a pioneer woman who raced men’s motocross, successful entrepreneur, and founder of ADVWoman.  Pat will meet you where you are to create a highly effective, safe, and fun experience for you. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that all riders go through a Level 1 training of some sort AND have gotten proficient at the skills that were taught. This will set you up for the best success for a Level 2 class. Trying to accomplish higher level skills without a strong foundation from lower level courses is frustrating at best and often leads to unnecessary falls and possible injuries. The F.A.R.M. offers training features that include: varied elevations for up and down hills, hill fail turnarounds, off camber terrain management, loose hill starts, logs, mud pit, and loose surfaces like a rock garden, gravel, sand, and more. If you get in over your head… we can move you over to the Level 1 class no problem. This is a very unique opportunity to be able to select one class and then decide that it’s too advanced at this time and switch over to the other group.

Special offering: We will make use of the classroom that The F.A.R.M. provides and review video that is taken throughout the trainings (for those who want that). This is a great way for YOU to see exactly what we’re coaching you on. Video is worth a 1,000 words! Pat will also be giving a presentation on her latest trip to Nepal, which is very inspiring.

Dual Sport and Adventure Rider Training

Did you know the majority of roads in the world are unimproved? Do you want to be limited on where you are able to ride? Do you ever look down a road and wonder where it goes, but because it’s dirt, you don’t go explore it? Open the possibilities of your exploration by getting some off-street training!

I have been trained by some of the best in the industry starting with Bret Tkacs, Gary Anderson of Puget Sound Safety Off-Road Training and Bill Dragoo. The curriculum I follow is from BMW Certified Instructor, Bill Dragoo of Dragoo Adventure Rider Training - D.A.R.T. I’ll say it again, it is essential for you to know exactly what your motorcycle will do; how far it will lean, how fast it will stop, how rapidly it will accelerate and how quickly it will fall.

I travel and train around the country for events, personalized and small group classes and tours.

Street Training

Whether you’re interested in staying on the street or needing to get from one off-street route to another, you probably want to know how to do it safely. My goal as a professional traffic safety instructor is to help reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities! I am a certified Total Control Instructor (Basic thru Intermediate) and Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoach (Basic thru Advanced). It is essential for you understand how your inputs will effect how the motorcycle maintains traction and control; how far it can lean, how quickly it can get stopped (or not), how rapidly it will accelerate and how quickly it will fall.

I work as a contracted instructor for several schools. I also do custom classes to prep you for your motorcycle endorsement training, help you refresh your skills or maybe dust off some cobwebs. Motorcycle riding is like any other sport, if you don’t use the skills, you’ll lose them! Having a professional coach evaluate and tweak your techniques could not only be life changing and increase your FUN FACTOR, but could be life saving!

I travel and train around the country for events, personalized and small group classes and tours.

Backcountry Immersion Training Tours

Do you want to get off the streets and into the backcountry? Immersion training tours are the best way to retain the skills learned because those skills will be reinforced over multiple days all the while under the watchful eye of your instructor.

I have co-led several Backcountry Discovery Routes Tours in WA, ID, CO, NM, and NE. I have well over 10,000 miles of backcountry travel under my wonder women buckle. I have experienced 9 of the 11 BDRs and and would love to help you gain some experience and learn how to ride safely in the backcountry.

I travel and train around the country for events, personalized and small group classes and tours.

Why invest in your training with me?

I want to share the knowledge I have accumulated over the years of instructor training and personal experience to help YOU master your bike, not only to increase your FUN FACTOR, but your overall safety.

I have been riding since 2005 and have more instructor training and certifications than any other instructor I know.  I have been a full-time instructor since 2016 and am committed to teaching others how to survive this amazing sport!

There is so much to learn in this sport, and it is truly an amazing way to explore our world!  Motorcycling is a very risky activity, but there are things we can do to manage the risks and bring the risks down to a manageable level.  I modify the curriculum to ensure you receive over learning to the skills. I don’t just introduce the skills, I allow for many repetitions, which allows you to really walk away with more knowledge of what inputs you put into the bike and how if effects the overall handling of traction and control.  By extending the timeframe for each exercise, you ride away with more knowledge, therefore, increasing your odds of survival and your overall FUN FACTOR skyrockets! Students learn 75% of the information when they can actually truly practice over and over. They can increase that percentage to 90% given more time on a task.

Many instructors introduce the skills and then leave it up to you to continue to work on the techniques. Well, if you forget many of the techniques taught, what good does that do you? You still need to practice the skills and techniques regularly, but at least now you’ll have a better chance of remembering what it is you need to practice.  You want to practice often so you build the skills into your muscle memory.  Then if something were to happen that requires you to make an evasive maneuver, your muscle memory takes over and your abilities kick into high gear and you do what you need to do to avoid a disaster.

When people learn new skills, they only really learn it by having enough time to make mistakes and then learn to correct those mistakes. I am a trained observer and make good use of time so that you get more repetitions, and you will have a better chance of retaining the skills. I will give you accurate feedback in a timely manner so you can make the best use of your training.

Safety & Community

2022 Total Control Track Clinic

I know all too well, safety is the upmost of importance!  I am committed to giving you a safe environment to learn from.  I am committed to teaching you how you can be a safer rider on and off the street.   I require everyone to wear all the gear, all the time, and will help you figure out what that means for you.

I am committed to help grow this wonderful sport and community. I am especially interested in helping women gain confidence and empower them, so they know they can get out there and explore this wonderful world of ours.  What better way to do that, but to do it on a motorcycle!

“I took an entry level adventure course with Shal. Even if you feel like you know a lot of these basics, having a knowledgeable eye like hers is invaluable. She helped point out and made some small changes to my technique that equated to significant increases in performance. I highly recommend and can’t wait to learn more from her in the future.” - Rayne

“Shal saw me struggling and gave me some basic pointers that I hadn’t even thought about. They truly made a huge difference! I would take the training again and again!”

Adventure Rider Training

in Cle Elum, WA

Dates: July 22-23, 2023

2-Day Small Group Instruction

Level 1 and 2

Minimum of 3 riders, maximum of 8

Semi-private instruction is the next best way for you to get what you need out of training. There are fewer students, which allows for more attention towards each student and we can cover more in a shorter time period, not to mention, you get more practice time!

The small group training sessions will be more structured, but can still be tailored to fit the group as a whole.

For off-street training, I use the D.A.R.T. (Dragoo Adventure Rider Training) curriculum, which operates on the premise that there are four cornerstones to safe and successful adventure riding:

 • Balance.    • Control     • Judgment     • Attitude

The D.A.R.T curriculum has been proven effective in helping riders improve their skills and in changing habits to allow them to safely and efficiently conquer rough terrain. Following your training, you will discover that any one of these cornerstones can get you through almost any situation you might encounter during your adventures. A complete breakdown of each cornerstone and its particular value is provided in your training sessions.

In Level 1,, I begin by teaching the basics of balance and control before progressing on up the scale of exercises. It’s a stair step approach as everything builds from one step to the other. You can’t miss a step, and the better you learn the early steps, the faster you’ll master the more difficult skills. Bike setup, body position, peg weight steering and discussions about the philosophy behind each element are important parts of your training. Exercises are cumulative and comprehensive. Trying to accomplish higher level skills without a strong foundation from Level 1 is frustrating at best and often leads to unnecessary falls and possible injuries.
